A young alien on a distant planet peers through a high-powered telescope seeing Earth’s surface and busy Earthlings. The curious alien notices several brightly colored yellow[1] school buses and begins to track their movement. First, the alien observes that school buses are highly clustered for much of the day, and two times each day the clusters dissipate. The young alien is quite excited by this new discovery, and, confidently, terms it sudden bus dissipation (SBD™). After a few days, the exuberant alien notices that the yellow clusters stop dissipating. Puzzled, the alien continues to observe the buses and after two long days, the bus clusters dissipate again. Phew. All was well again until SBD™ suddenly ceases for 3 long months. How could this be?

A graduate student was recently trying to come up with an explanation for something he saw in the lab. He couldn’t. He was trying, but struggling to come up with new ideas. I said to him, “You need to stop looking under the lamp post”. The parable of the lamp post tells, loosely, of a young couple walking home after an evening out. They arrive home only to discover they had dropped their keys somewhere along the way. Troubled, they race the encroaching night, retracing their steps, and stop underneath the nearest lamp post. As one searched carefully under the light, the other asked, “why are you searching here?”, to which the first replied, “because this is where the light is shining”.  

An unsuspecting mouse dives for cheese, only to crash through the painting façade and land on a hot stove; he jumps onto a cube of ice to cool off, while ascending a tiny escalator; he drops off at the top, lands on a boxing glove, only to bounce off, naturally, landing in a mouse-sized basket thereby setting off a miniature rocket which sends him to the moon. This approach to catching mice pictured above, designated “the best mouse trap” by cartoonist Rube Goldberg, can be described as: clever, complicated, absurd; but is it creative?
